Products – Villa Salmon
Firm, healthy salmon can only come from the best environment. The fish need space in which to swim, clean surroundings, clean food. Villa farms produce such salmon in low-density farms whose pens are suspended in 500-600 metre deep Norwegian fjords.
Villa is a pioneer in sustainable salmon farming. They are the world leaders in Wrasse- or cleanerfish-technology, making the most of the natural symbiotic relationship between salmon and Wrasse, both to foster the health of the fish and eliminate the need for harsh cleaning agents. Here's how it works: Salmon at sea are susceptible to sea lice. Wild salmon rid themselves of the lice by swimming up-river as the sea lice cannot survive in fresh water. Conventional, overcrowded fish farms deal with their epidemic of sea lice by adding a pesticide such as Slice to their feed.
Our farmers take a cleaner, healthier, more holistic approach. The Wrasse is a small fish that likes to eat sea lice. Salmon are perfectly happy to let Wrasse eat the sea lice off them. Villa introduces Wrasse into the low-density, deep-water salmon pens, leaving the Wrasse to nourish themselves and protect the salmon by eating sealice. No antibiotics, hormones or pesticides are needed. The Wrasse swim freely in and out the nets, living in a perfect symbiotic relationship with the fish. The Wrasse also like to eat the algae that builds up on the nets, thereby reducing our farmer's need to use harsh detergents and cleaning chemicals such as copper sulfate.
The story of the Wrasse and the salmon illustrates the way in which Villa's farming practices mirror the amazing cycle of Nature to improve aquaculture and to improve the quality of the fish you eat. That Villa promotes and teaches the use of this 'technology' illustrates their, and our, commitment to responsible marine stewardship and customer health and satisfaction.
With sustainably-raised Villa salmon (and the help of the Wrasse), you need no longer wish for better fish: you can have it.
Villa Organic Salmon
Villa Organic Salmon has all the flavor, texture and color of Villa Salmon ... and then some. To be certified organic, farmers, their farms, and their produce must satisfy stringent standards. Facilities and feed are inspected. Record-keeping is thorough to ensure traceability. More than in any other type of farming, the concern for clean, healthy and safe practices is paramount. You don’t have to take our words for it; we stake our credibility on independent, third-party oversight and certification by Debio, Norway’s largest certifier, and by Naturland, the most reputable certifier of organic products in the European Union. Our farmers are inspected at least once a year, there may also be unannounced visit at the certifiers’ discretion. Farmers must continuously monitor, record and report on water quality and fish health in order to qualify for certification. There are no higher standards for quality seafood.
Villa Organic Salmon eats as well as you should. Like you, they need protein. Where you can get your protein from the salmon, they get theirs from meal and oils derived from the leftovers of fish caught for human consumption and from fish caught in sustainable fisheries. Thus, you can be sure that what’s in the feed, in the salmon, and therefore in you, does not come from overfished or polluted waters.
Great care and dedication go into raising and bringing you Villa Organic Salmon. It’s best for you, for the fish and for the planet. You deserve nothing less.
